Living in South Florida is wonderful, especially for our seniors enjoying their retirement here in Palm Beach County. However, the exact things that make our Florida homes beautiful — like cool tile floors and expansive open layouts — can sometimes present hidden dangers. Falls are a leading cause of injury among older adults, but thankfully, most of them are completely preventable.
With a few straightforward adjustments around the house, we can easily create a much safer environment for our loved ones in Boca, Delray, and beyond.
1. Mind the Tile Floors
Almost every home here has tile flooring because it keeps the house cool. But tile is notoriously unforgiving and slippery, especially when someone tracks in water from the pool or a sudden afternoon thunderstorm. Encourage the use of sturdy, non-slip indoor shoes rather than just socks, which slide easily on tile surfaces.
2. Secure the Lanai and Patio Areas
We spend so much time enjoying the beautiful Florida weather out on our lanais. Make sure the transition thresholds between sliding glass doors and the patio are clearly visible and free of clutter. Adding a strip of high-visibility, anti-slip tape to the threshold can prevent a nasty stumble.
3. Secure Throw Rugs
Throw rugs look great on bare floors, but their edges often curl up in the humidity, creating prime tripping hazards. Either remove them entirely, or use double-sided carpet tape to firmly anchor all four corners directly to the floor.
4. Bathroom Safety is Non-Negotiable
Bathrooms are dangerous zones regardless of where you live. Installing professionally mounted grab bars next to the toilet and inside the shower is an absolute must. Don't rely on towel racks — they aren't built to support a person's weight! Adding a slip-resistant bath mat inside the shower stall also makes a massive difference.
5. Brighten Up the House
We rely on our glorious Florida sunshine during the day, but our homes can get remarkably dark in the evenings. As eyesight naturally changes with age, navigating a dimly lit hallway becomes risky. Simple plug-in nightlights in the hallways and bathrooms, as well as easy-to-reach lamp switches near the bed, are quick and inexpensive fixes.
